About NCX

Location: USA

Offset Type: Forestry

By combining satellite imagery, machine learning, and field measurements, NCX measures every acre of U.S. forest every year to bring transparency and accountability to forest carbon credits.

Credits bought through the Natural Capital Exchange empower landowners big and small to participate in forest carbon markets while driving real climate impact. Their approach incentivizes the growth of older, more carbon-rich forests, supporting rural communities, and advances science-based measurements of both carbon and biodiversity impact.

Why Forestry?

Trees inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. They store carbon in their mass as they grow - one of nature’s natural carbon storage technologies. Recent research shows global forests store about 30% of all annual human CO₂ emissions.

Carbon Offset Evaluation

We picked NCX because forests have enormous potential for capturing and storing carbon, but it’s difficult to verify and enforce forestry projects, and to ensure your dollars are actually causing them to happen.

NCX targets acres that are actually at risk of being harvested, leveraging their expertise in forest management and ensuring that carbon purchases create real change on the landscape.

The Commons community is supporting projects from landowners large and small across theUnited States. By eliminating measurement and monitoring costs for landowners, NCX also democratizes access to forest carbon markets so that more landowners and acres of forest can be part of the climate solution.

Commons' Community Impact

The Commons community started supporting NCX in October 2021. Our purchases will be part of NCX’s December 2021 bidding cycle, meaning we will be paying landowners to sequester carbon in their forests during the 2022 calendar year. The credits will be formally delivered and retired upon final evaluation, by June 2023. Via remote sensing and field measurements, harvest deferral relative to the business as usual scenario is measured before and after the performance period to validate the actual, realized climate impact.

Commons' Offset Portfolio

Supporting carbon offsets can be a powerful way to invest in green technologies and protect natural ecosystems. But they aren’t a silver bullet – each project has a unique set of risks.

With the Commons Offset Portfolio, we do the work to maximize your impact. Just as you wouldn’t put all your money into one stock – we don’t put all your dollars into a single offset project.
